Frenchie Tips
Welcoming your Frenchie into your home is an exciting experience! Here are some necessary tips we feel new Frenchie owners need to help ensure a happy and healthy life for your new furry friend.
Frenchie Tip #1
Understand the Breed
- Personality Traits: Frenchies are known for their friendly, affectionate, and playful nature. They can be stubborn but are typically eager to please.
- Size and Build: They are small and muscular, which makes them more prone to certain health issues.
Frenchie Tip #2
Health Care
- Regular Vet Visits: Schedule regular check-ups with your vet to keep track of your Frenchie’s health.
- Watch for Brachycephalic Issues: Frenchies have short noses, making them more prone to breathing difficulties. Avoid a lot of exercise during hot weather and make sure they don’t overheat.
- Vaccinations and Preventative Care: Keep up with vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm medication.
Frenchie Tip #3
Nutrition
- Quality Diet: Feed a high-quality dog food specifically for small breeds. Ask your vet for recommendations based on your dog’s age, weight, and activity level.
- Watch Their Weight: Frenchies can easily become overweight, which increases health issues. Watch their food consumption and provide regular exercise.
Frenchie Tip #4
Exercise and Play
- Regular Exercise: While Frenchies don’t require a lot of exercise, daily walks and playtime are essential for their physical and mental health.
- Interactive Toys: Engage them with toys that stimulate their minds, such as puzzle toys or chew toys.
Frenchie Tip #5
Training and Socialization
- Start Early: Begin training and socialization as soon as you bring your Frenchie home. Positive reinforcement works best.
- Basic Commands: Teach basic commands like sit, stay, and come, paw/high-five. Consistency is key to your Frenchie mastering each command.
Frenchie Tip #6
Create a Safe Environment
- Dog-Proof Your Home: Remove anything harmful to your furry friend. I.E. toxic plants, small objects, and anything they could chew or swallow.
- Designated Space: Create a comfortable and safe space for your Frenchie to relax, such as a cozy bed in a quiet area.
Frenchie Tip #7
Grooming
- Regular Brushing: Frenchies have short coats that require very little grooming, but regular brushing helps reduce shedding and keeps their skin healthy.
